Top Book Recommendations from Floyd Wickman
Mar 12, 2026Because we encounter rejection on a regular basis, we must learn to control our internal response. We must learn to think differently than is our nature. We must choose our mindset. This is how we stay motivated to do the hard things.
Floyd said, “You can’t rise to greatness on a poor self-image.”
He would know. He had a terrible self-image from his youth until age 28. Especially hard was his first year in real estate, which was such a financial failure. It was in his second year that he started changing the way he saw himself. That’s when he started believing it was really possible to change.
It was the beginning of a lifelong study of how to become the person he wanted to be. The transformation actually began when he changed offices. His new manager insisted he take a class at Sales Training Institute. It was 1968 and the class cost $1100.
Without the GI Bill, he’d never have been able to enroll. And without that manager, he’d have quit after the first lesson because he came back to the office and said, “They want me to learn words to say. And, Boss, the words….they’re just not me!” That’s when James Lee Hulette said, “Floyd. Who would want to be you? You’re broke! Go learn the words.”
Thanks, Mr. Hulette. Because what happened to that young man who had failed all his life?
He not only learned “the words” but transformed the way he thought about himself.
He set a goal to be the #1 listing agent in his 5-county area. And did it.
He became manager of the lowest producing office at Lee Real Estate, and turned it around. With 8 agents he trained personally, the office averaged 23 closings per month for four consecutive years. (BTW: never the same 8 agents!)
Floyd Wickman became successful by changing his self-esteem. He read. He said affirmations. He believed he could succeed. And, thank God he did, because you can’t be a great speaker and trainer without a good self-image. And it was from the platform that he changed the most lives. Including mine.
Here's the list of books that changed his life and that Floyd recommended I read.
These are the books that become our foundation so we could control our thoughts and stretch for success.
- Think & Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill (I usually read this annually.)
- The Magic Of Thinking Big by David Schwartz
- As A Man Thinketh by James Allen
- Psycho-Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz (a personal favorite.)
- The Power Of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale
- Success Through a Positive Mental Attitude by Napoleon Hill
- The Richest Man In Babylon by George Clason
- Acres of Diamonds by Russell Conwell
Zig Ziglar was known to say, “People say motivation doesn’t last. Neither does bathing – that’s why we recommend it daily.”
Listen or read each day to control your self-image, which is determined by your thoughts.
Whose life will you affect today because you did?
